How much Concrete Ballast do require please - order please

Hello,

could someone help me out here please.

I'm making a concrete base for a kennel and it is 30 metres from my property bored so I'm going to mix it all with a cement mixer using the raw materials.

it measures.

8 inches deep
6.5 metres long
2.5 metres wide

I worked that out to be 3.2 metres cubed.

My local building supplies advised i'd need 7 tonnes of ballast, and 56 bags of cement!!!!!!! Costing about £900!

Can someone please help me on this, it needs to be a strong mix as dogs will be on it.

You'll need the longest day to mix 3.2M³ and you may not finish it before dark!

I reckon 1.5 to 2M³ is the most can be done by two fit guys in one day.
That's with materials close to hand, and minimal distance to barrow.

Price up a pump with the readymix. It'll be done in a couple of hours.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The problem I have is the distance from the front of the property to the area.

I've had quotes of £440 for a mix and barrow service

£300 for a mixer to dump 3.5 metres cubed on the drive (which could be interesting if it sets)

them almost £1000 in raw materials!

I'm so stuck

8" deep seems rather over the top. Much easier to prepare the base with compacted hardcore then go for something like 4" concrete on top of this.

I don't want it to move !

I've got some rather large dogs and the kennel needs bolting down to this.

renting a concrete pumper seems a huge expense.

having the concrete mixed on site seems a huge amount of work

having gthe concrete dropped off on the drive seems a huge mistake waiting to happen.

The pump may cost about £200. It includes two guys who do most of the work. All you have to do is, more or less, tamp/level and trowel it.
The price will be something like:
First hour £125, subsequent hours £75. Additional tubing may be required, therefore chargable.

Add the cost of the pump to the readymix and, considering the ease and speed, it's very cost-effective.

Thank you, I never knew concrete was that expensive though! considering its for dogs to wee on.

200mm is overkill!
150mm compacted mot type 1 and 100mm c35 concrete is plenty.

You can get the gear less than £900 a well.

alastair is spot on with his advice. 100mm is more than enough for a dog run,
and it doesn't need to be any stronger than 6/1.

Aye c35 for multi storey kennel c15 more like.

Get a readymix load and have it pumped in.

Job done.

Don't fart about with barrows and certainly don't have it dumped in a heap - you will regret it.
