How do you position the coal?How do I know if I need new coal? And would it have to be the exact same coal? Why does the blue flame not stay on when I ignite it? Can anyone help please? A heating fella said "just position the coal." Thank you. Sham

Assuming this is some kind of gas fire - the coals are arranged according to the manufacturers instructions.
If any are broken or missing - replacements must be the exact same type.
If you don't have the instructions, state the make/model and someone may be able to provide them.
Or post a picture of the fire as it may be possible to identify it that way.
