Can someone tell me how to attach a baton to a wall for affixing a curtain rail? I'm wondering about two options that I can see so far, the first is to glue the rail on, if so what type of glue would be best? Or secondly drill into the metal lintel, if so what type of drill bit would I need as I don't know if I have a drill bit suitable for metal? I'm personally in favour of option 1 as it seems like less hassle, but just not sure if its suitable. Hope you guys can help.

Rely on glue at your peril, in my opinion.....however, it can help if you use some other fixing device. No Nails type of grab adhesive is generally used.
For masonry drilling, its a masonry bit and a hammer drill. For steel drilling its an HSS Jobber drill and a drill with no hammer action, and maybe some self tapping screws. If its a thinish catnic type lintel in there, you can get screws that self drill as you screw them in......but using them properly does take some practice.
Of course it is possible to extend your batten beyond the lintel, hopefully to hit brickwork!
