How to build a ceiling tray for indirect/mood lighting

Hi,
Has anyone got any advice in building a frame for ceiling lighting for something like in the photo attached. I initially built a small tray out of mdf as a sample to see what the finish would be like. Once it was primed and painted, I didn't think the finish looked that great updrywall against the ceiling and walls which are constructed with drywall.

What I am looking for are pics of a frame, what size/type of timber used, that sort of thing.

Any help advice appreciated.

Yu can get readymade cornice/cove for lighting eg

If you are using led strips then then you could use ordinary coving fixed to wall only, just below ceiling with led fixed to wall below the top of the upper edge.
