Hi guys ive done a search on here also but have not come across the answers i need properly as the search function is weird lol

I am wanting to treat my sister by renovating all her new house for her since she isnt too well and in hospital at the moment.

I wanted to add some form of cladding to the ceiling, timber or pvc but I ve been told that with PVC if you have downlights you have the problem of discolourisation and possibly worst. Hence I was wondering how much of a problem this really is and whether it would be better to get timber cladding.

The room is a kitchen approx 3x5 meters probably a little less.

How much do you think it would cost for the material and how exactly do you fit these? Do you use some form of adhesive as they would be going onto a plastered ceiling.

Cladding is pretty tired as an idea these days. If I bought a house with it - I'd remove it. Why not just do a good paint job of the ceiling?

cladding with wood

15-18mm thick battons accross the joists every 24-36" first and last 3 inches away from walls 9x88mm[coverage so9x95]tounge and groove 1" panel pins into the tounge at a 45degree angle[pin gun with a "V" base ideal for this job

seal the back of the boards before instilation avoid blocking the grooves

big, thanks for the reply matey.

There are a few things here. First of all I dont know the locations or even directions in which the joists are going in as its not a new ceiling, its been here prior to our purchase.

Now this bit:
first and last 3 inches away from walls 9x88mm[coverage so9x95]tounge and groove 1" panel pins into the tounge at a 45degree angle[pin gun with a "V" base ideal for this job
I dont quite understand to be honest, maybe due to not being familiar with the terms

its just the standard v groove txg cladding you get at the sheds[bxq wicks ect]

it comes out at around 9mm x 95 but when clipped together each plank only covers 88mm

i buy mines from a timber merchant they do up to 4.5m for around 70p a mtr

the joists will probably be 400 or 16" centres so find one and measure and poke ;)
most of the time they take the shortest span if you have floor boards up stairs the joists go at r/angles to the boards [you can find the joists by the securing nails or screws
the light in the middle of the room has a fair chance of being half way between 2

once you have located your joists you affix your battons accross the joist at right angles with the first and last batton 3 inches from the wall others in between for example 3.2m is 10ft6" so 2 battons 3"in = 10ft 2 intermediate battons would be over36" so 3 intermediates gives 10' div by 4 = 30"

so batton at 3" from wall next batton 30" then 60" then 90"and final 120" with 3" left

any clearer!!!!

much more clear big, didnt expect it to involve so much work. I thought they were stuck on the ceiling via some form of adhesive but i was wrong

you can just use no nails on walls as gravity has little effect
but on the ceiling its has a bit more impact ;)

with sheet material you mayget away with it without propping up
indeed it is desighned to go up with no nails /panel adhesive type glue but never put any sheet material on a ceiling before without mechanical fixing [screws/nails]
