I have an IKEA curtain ceiling track to fix, holding floor to ceiling curtains. There isn't a joist to go into in the exact spot required, so will just have to just go into the plaster board.

What is the best fixing for this that will take the weight? Will self drill plasterboard fixings do?

You want toggle bolt fixings to spread the load. But I think with ceiling to floor curtains, you would be better off using them to fix a batten first, and then fix the track to the batten. Is the track going in the same direction as the joists, or across them. If acrross them, then you'd screw the batten into the joists as well. Self drill plasterboard fixings will just pull out with that sort of weight.

Joists are going the same direction, and of course the track needs to go in the middle of them.

It's always the way. Then you'd be best putting up a batten to spread the loading.

Thinking it maybe easier and look better to fix to the wall, did want to have a nice flush finish, which a batten won't really give.

If you can do that, then yes, much better. If you were just using ordinary curtains, then there's a lot of fixings that you could use, but floor to ceiling curtains would be over double that weight. See what you think about these if you dont think the weight is too heavy.

You would normally fit curtain rail to top of window frame not the ceiling.

Eh? Curtain tracks are normally fitted to the wall above the head. Not the ceiling or the window frame.

As has been mentioned, you would usually attach a curtain track to the wall, rather than the ceiling.

However in some cases (as in my home), there was no space between uPVC window frames and the ceiling to achieve this, leaving the ceiling as the only viable option.

One thing that you definitely want to ensure in this case is that you are screwing into joists. Failure to do so (especially if you're talking lined, full floor to ceiling curtains) may result in you pulling sections of your ceiling down...
