First time tiling - going rather well, though trowelling tile adhesive on to walls is a nightmare. 'ALL' the videos show bucket trowel in most cases a couple of lumps on to the notched trowel, then wiping it all over the wall with the straight edge, then using the notched side to spread.

When I do it, I'm forever losing bits over the edge of the trowel (on to the floor). I've ended up using a filler knife to put small amounts on the wall at a time, before then using the notched trowel to spread and scoop up the excess.

How do I get better at it? I just can't get the hang of it.

I'm sure the adhesive is at a good consitency, have used it with a slightly 'wetter' mix, and a more thick mix.

Is it 'normal' to lose lumps here and there off the edge of the trowel, am I expecting too much?

Use a plastering hawk in other hand under notched trowel to catch anything you drop.

You can make one. You will get better at it over time
