Hi all

We moved into a new home 6 months ago and for some reason we all keep missing our step or twisting our ankle on these two steps in the photo. I've no idea why.

Please can someone give us some suggestions as to how to make these steps safer or even get rid of them? Maybe a slope or similar?

These steps are of different height but your brain has learned that steps are of equal height so you lift your foot accordingly. You need to make the steps the same.

As you have discovered steps of unequal tread and riser are dangerous and non-compliant. As a temporary measure, securely fix timber to increase the height of the middle step, so that they are all equal. If the stairs are then safe and easier to use, a more permanent and neater solution can be undertaken.
PS a slope would be difficult to use being too steep.
