I have 15+ year old alarm system in the house - and now the ldc panel with the keypads needs attention - it still works but sometimes shows KPD missing - K01 and then the LCD backlighting goes as well.

Seems like after many presses on the keypad over the years something needs resoldering inside. So I need to open the lcd panel plastic box- but what's the sequence to not annoy the neighbourhood with the alarm / tamper going off ?

It looks like this :

Cheers for any help

Congratulations on having one of the worst panels ever made :) You won't find many engineers that like them!

Sounds more like a damaged cable, loose connection or possibly a faulty keypad/panel to me.

Had any new carpets/decorating/building work done recently?

You could have a look in the keypad for any loose connections. Removing it will sound the internal sounders so your neighbours should be unaware. Inputting your code will stop the noise.

If the cable checks out OK, I would bin the panel for a new one.

yep thats exactly what i would do.

these were the worst Scantronic ever made

if you cant fix that one upgrade to another Scantronic (other makes and models are available)

me personally i prefer Galaxy, but i can work with most other panels out there

thanks folks for the quick answer.

No nailing, drilling or cutting has taken place recently around the alarm wiring.

So does that mean that I can just replace the faulty panel with a newer prettier model and even another brand ? Do most fit and don't I need to change all the existing cabling and the metal box in the loft ? That would be great news.

I thought all manufacturers would have the their own proprietary designs - but maybe there is a standard after all - what do I know - anything without a Windows interface I can't operate :D

Cheers

right then here we go;
me personally i use galaxy, but to be honest it is NOT a DIY panel in any shape or form.

what i would reccomend is a Scantronic panel (eight zone) and remote keypad
the keypad is a stylish looking and will not look out of place (it looks a hell of lot better than the one you have)

the panel (end station) the bit with all the wiring in it (in your loft ?) will also have to be changed,
a new battery would be required (unless your present battery is a 7 amp hour 12volt one and is under two years old) some operators say that batteries last 5 years but i personnally always change them every 4 years.

your sensors will work on the system and so will your external siren/strobe unit.
also so will the internal speaker.

but if you are in any way unsure of what to do please contact a local installer to arrange an site visit.

be aware that there is a mains supply connected to your panel; DO NOT REMOVE THE SUPPLY WITHOUT ISOLATING IT FROM YOUR DISTRIBUTION BOARD (FUSEBOX) ELECTRICITY CAN KILL !!!!

its really up to you what you fit but be aware and ask some of the other engineers on this site

Unfortunately, you'll have to change both the keypad (in your picture) and the metal box with all the wiring. It's not too difficult, just label each individual wire before you chop it out. If you replace it with another Scantronic panel (the 9651), most of the terminology is the same. As above, make sure you isolate the mains first, and be aware that the external sounder may sound from it's own internal battery when you disconnect all power. This should stop after 20 minutes depending on the age of the unit...

We should be able to help if you get stuck!
