How to replace barrel on unusual lock?

Hi

Weve recently moved house and would like to replace the barrel in our front door as we think the previous owners still have some keys.

Ive been told that the chubb lock is an expensive specialist one - we're not able to get keys cut in a regular shop.

Can anyone tell me a bit about this lock? There is no identifying info on it apart from chubb written on the key. Can I replace the barrel myself? Which one do I buy??

That is an old Chubb High security rim lock, manufactured in the 70's and 80's, and designed for offices. Chubb were bought out by Yale and then Assa Abloy. If you do a search on the web you will find who you can contact locally to identify it's model number. I doubt very much that they make new barrels for them. You could always give it a go.

It is an excellent lock. It looks like a Chubb 4L67. You can still buy them. However yours has both an inside and an outside cylinder, and it would probably cost more to buy a pair of replacement cylinders than to buy a new lock.

It is pretty well unpickable and cannot be bumped, but most burglars who don't work for MI5 would just kick the door down.

It is also possible to dismantle it and change the disks around, but I should think it would be expensive to pay a locksmith do do it for you.

The mechanism is called "Ava" and is similar to that used in Abloy cylinders, but bigger and presumably stronger.

You should be able to get keys copied at a Chubb agent, there should be one in your town. However if it was on the door when you moved in you don't know who's got a copy key, so you must replace it. I would give you a few pounds for the old one if you are chucking it out.
