How to tackle a cold downstairs and warm upstairs?

Hi folks.

With winter approaching fast I want to sort out something that has been niggling at me for a couple of years. Once our heating comes on in the evenings, all the rads in the house get hot as expected, so they are all working fine. The thermostat is at the top of the landing. Once the upstairs gets up to temperature, the heating turns off, but downstairs gets cold pretty quickly after its turned off.

I know I have a draught coming from somewhere, but I have no idea where. If we are in the living room with the door closed, if the door gets opened you can really feel the cold air rushing in. Tried a few things to find the draught, but not found one yet.

Other than finding the draught source, is there anything else I can do to try and even out the temp throughout the house? As it is there is a very noticeable temp change as you go down the stairs. I'm thinking TRV on the rads wont make any difference as its the thermostat at the top of the stairs which is turning off the boiler.

Normal since hot air rises. Move stat downstairs and have TRVs on all rads apart from the room where the thermostat is.

Close all windows and walk around with a candle, you will soon see where the draught is coming from.

Put the stat in the room you want to directly control.
Then its a question of balancing all the other radiators in other rooms to achieve the temperature you require them to be.
