How to tell which is inflow / outflow - radiators are off

Hi
Had some plastering done, radiators were removed by plasterers now I want to refit them and put a TRV on. How can I tell which pipe is the inflow or outflow now the rad is off? Is there any way? One of the pipes is open.

It does not normally matter which pipe a modern (bi-derectional) TRV is fitted. Just fit the valve in the most sensible position ie where it is more likely to sense the temperature (that means not stuck in a corner or behind a door).
