We have a Panasonic TV remote that changes channel and volume at the merest hint of pointing in the right direction but our Humax Freesat box controller requires the accuracy of an Olympic shooting champion.

Well, not quite that bad but very unforgiving, requiring a clean sight line at the right level even with new batteries.

Can anything be done to improve things?

The Panasonic uses a frequency modulation type method to receive information, where, the freeview, uses a singular old style basic signal...the old style system is rubbish.

The Panasonic system is also used for Sky. But the old style system is used for Cable, freeview, and old style remotes. Which results in low response, non return, and no function. You can 'juice' the remote up, by taking the batteries out, shorting the terminals out, then inserting new batteries.....

That's why freeview is cheap...and Sky is dear...

Probably a lower power led in the remote which probably has a narrower beam angle aswell.

Your best bet would probably be to get a universal remote control and program that to control the humax.

I have a humax freeview recorder, don't have any problems with the remote.

Gets a little vague when the batteries get low.

Shorting out the battery terminals removes the memory effect of half charged batteries on the crystal oscillator, which then runs out of sync, and as it's pulse moderated, it is out of sync quickly, when the batteries go low, so as I say, the Panasonic/B&O/Sky remotes use PCM, which sends a frequency modulated burst, so the signal is contained within a waveform, which contains more information, and is a far more reliable communication standard. B&O were using it 30 years ago, when most TV's didn't even have a remote control. (B&O = Bang and Oluffsen, purveyors of top quality AV equipment)

I assume you've removed the protective film from the front fascia of the box?

Under the front flap is also another protective film which is very difficult to notice and remove.
