We have a 40 year old, open vented HW cylinder, with yellow insulation - which is supposed to be no as effective as the later green.

I used to have the boiler set, to reheat my cylinder any time at all, when it found it necessary, during the day. To try to save a bit of gas, I limited that to 3pm to 7pm. The HW was noticeably cooler next morning/day, so I was considering options, to help insulate the cylinder, such as buying one of those ready made insulations for cylinders.

Some weeks ago, I spotted a 'wrong size' summer quilt, for a bed we no longer have, so I decided to see if draping that over the cylinder might help. I just draped it loosely over the top, pulling it, and tucking it around the pipes. The difference in HW temperature, next day, has been very noticeable.

What time of day is your biggest demand for hot water ?

3pm to 7pm strikes me as unusual. I heat mine from 6am to 7am and again at 8pm to 9pm (doesn't always cut in, especially this time of year).

After showers there is very little need for much hot water and the tank lasts. Admittedly it's a more recent and well insulated 1

go to several props where they still have the old non insulated cylinders
Many still heated by gravity circulation !!!

Tag team still trolling.

Well done Harry, you've given them something to do today. Playground must be closed

Not really much demand for HW on a morning (electric shower), the demand is for baths in the evening, sometimes, and washing up after dinner. What demand there is of a morning, can be met by what was heated pre-7pm. It's just hotter on a morning now, than it was/ heat retention is better than I had anticipated.

What time do you have a bath and go to bed? Perhaps set the water to be heated for an hour and do the washing up just before you have a bath. If you are not using hot water before 6 pm it is pointless putting it on at 3pm.

We eat anytime between 3 and 7pm..

Paying a little more attention to the HW water temperature - despite the closeness of the cylinder temperature control, and the fact the boiler was set to maintain it's temperature - I noticed this afternoon that the water at the sink was somewhat hotter than usual.

That is because your hands are somewhat hotter than usual and you are preoccupied with water temperature or in other words your mind is telling you what you want to hear!
