I'm wanting to fit an immersion element to an existing domestic copper HW cylinder, which some idiot plumbed in 15 years ago, not thinking that the immersion boss might get used in the future. They plumbed it so it is awkward to get to, and in fact a combination of the cupboard and pipes will foul a new element being inserted.
It is in a small cupboard behind the end of the bath, with a door for access above the bath, so the geography couldn't be worse for working on it.
Can you get flexible elements so they can be slipped past obstructions to get them in ?
We are thinking we are going to have to re plumb the tank, and spin it round otherwise, which seems a crazy amount of work given that a fool did the job originally and it would have been no more trouble for them to do it in a thoughtful way first time round.
Any ideas on other work arounds if it's a swine to get an element in geometrically?
We do have a variety of immersion keys, (and experience with stuck ones) so don't envisage a problem there...
This job is motivated by the house being heated by electricity (no gas), and there's an electric boiler. (yep, weird eh ?), and one of the 3 elements has blown, so it is on borrowed time. To change that looks awkward (another cupboard above the stair well lol), and will involve removing the boiler to strip it down, so keen to electively configure a "back up" via the immersion element, before we lose all hot water heating capability-- which will go down badly with the tenant.
Cheers !
Jonathan
