...where I was being subject to water torture and it was so fantastically realistic that I sat bolt upright in bed.

Now wide awake, I could see a slow but steady drip of water coming from the ceiling.

So my dream quickly turned into a nightmare, because we have a flat roof over our bedroom...

It looks like it will turn into an insurance claim. Can anybody who has had their flat roof repaired or replaced through their household insurance give me any advice?

My big question is if the roof needs replacing, can we pay extra to "upgrade" it to a pitched roof?

Of course, I will be in touch with insurers later this am., but any advice or comments gratefully received.

Fancy being woken at half four in the morning...

Your insurance won't pay for a new roof, only the secondary damage caused by the leak.(internal damage).

I needn't bother maintaining my house then as I can get the insurance to fix it. I'd like a new tiled roof, it's got a few cracked tiles from frost over the years. Cheers for that.

if you want to come to an arrangement with the roofing company, be sure to find one that does both sorts - many specialise in flat roofs

If phoning your insurance co (they may have a list of local approved repirers) try not to mention the flat bit at first.

I've got to agree with joe-90 here

When my M-I-L's flat roof sprung a leak and brought down the ceiling not only did they refuse to pay for the roof on the basis that it is the householders responsibility to maintain they also wouldn't pay for the ceiling for the same reason. And this was an Insurance Company approved by Help the Aged.

Pleasure!
