What are the laptops specs? Did you install it on a fresh hard drive? In what way is it slow?

Ok, I've just looked up the specs, seems to be a Pentium 2. Win98 will be best, if you have a 98 install disc then that will perform a fresh install and clear off XP.

the spec is: 300 mhz - pentium 11 - 4.5gb .
yes it was all installed onto a fresh harddrive.
the mouse point movement is very slow / loading windows takes around three mins before i am able to work it and shuting down the system again can take up to 5mins or so. i was thinking maybe more gb is requried..

if you can help in this matter, that would be great.

i have done that today but no joy. computer will not let me load win 98 for some reason....

I bigger hard drive would certainly help, XP will be using a massive chunk of that 4.5. How much memory is in there? You'll need at least 128mb for XP to run smoothly. One idea is to goto Start>right click on my computer>select properties>advanced tab>performance settings>select "adjust for best performance" This will speed things up a little.

Also you will need to have the drive formatted to FAT32 before installing 98.

If you reuse the xp disc and go through the motions it will format the drive before installing xp. You might be able to quit before it starts the installation procedure.
