I'd like an outdoor tap on the front of the house but the mains riser comes in to the kitchen at the back of the house. The water meter is at the front of the house next to the driveway.

I'm in a mid-terraced house, mains water goes up to loft for a cold storage tank and an open-vented CH tank. I was thinking taking a T off there and running a line out of the roof and down the front (might look naff once insulated!). I suppose I should have asked for this when the house was built 19 years ago!

Are there any alternative solutions I'm not thinking of?

Dig down at the front of the house and tee into the incoming main.

Add a local (below ground) stopcock and a double-check valve between the main and your stopcock
