Hi Everyone.

Would really appreciate some help or advice, we have an Ideal Classic FF250 wall mounted boiler which seems to have some major problems.

Now and again when switching the boiler on it has struggled to ignite, it makes a clicking noise and there is no flame, sometimes it has needed switching on and off a few times before it ignites. Once it does ignite all has seemed ok.

However in the last couple of weeks it has developed another problem, when we have turned the boiler on the pilot light/burner (apologies not sure of terminology) will come on for a minute or so, it will then go off, then after another minute or so will come back on, and it will continue like this.

Yesterday somebody from Northern Gas came in response to a neighbours phonecall about a smell of gas, it turned out that the gas was coming from the outflow pipe from our boiler which goes outside the house. For safety reasons we had to switch the boiler off and the cock letting the gas in the boiler was closed. For safety reasons we were given a condemned notice until it had been seen by a qualified corgi workman.

We had a plumber come out today and they said that the valve letting the gas in was working ok and the fan was also ok, the problem with the gas escaping outside was caused when the boiler switches on/off intermittently as explained above, whilst it is off the gas is still being let in and because the fan is still working so it is blowing this gas out through the pipe which goes through the wall and outside. He told us that we would need a new boiler which will cost around £900

We have no other means of heating and so need to get it done asap but just wondered if this sounded right or whether it sounds like something which could be fixed without getting a new boiler or if anyone has had similar problems with this boiler.

Many thanks for your help.

Goes to show what calling plumbers round to look at gas boilers gets you.

CORGI doesn't mean squat now either.

You need a Gas Safe registered engineer who can repair boilers.

You probably need a gas valve. Say£250 +fitting. give or take.

You are being ripped off he is lying to you at worst a gas valve at £150 ish for the part. Then fitting
At best a good service will sort it out.
BG would renew gas valve on a fixed price of 189 including the part.

Apologies didn't explain he was a plumber/gas heating engineer and is registered gas safe engineer, I just used the wrong terminology.
Many thanks for your advice, much appreciated. Do you think it would be worth getting another gas safe engineer around for a second opinion then?

For telling you to change a boiler instead of attemting to repair it or advise you that it is repairable at X amount dump him

The Classic was the last decent boiler Ideal ever made.

As long as it is not leaking water and the flue is intact they can be repaired.

Dump the unscrupulous tu7d and get a good engineer company.

He should have at least given you the option of a repair.
