Does anyone know if this is a traditional open vented boiler. I suspect it is but went to see one today and could not find a feed and expansion tank anywhere?
Sorry to add to my original posting, however I have even more questions to ask about the boiler and a general heating setup.
Went to visit a customer today who was experiencing problems with their hot and cold (tank fed) water.
The original problem was:
* The flow from hot and cold outlets had almost stopped
* There were funny banging noises from somewhere in the system
* The hot water was very murky
I oringinally suspected an air lock and tried to flush it out. During the original visit I did not have time to connect the pipework to the mains, all other attempts to shift it had failed. I revisited the property today and the flow for both hot and cold appears to be considerably better.
The hot water is still murky; the banging noises still exist (I haven't managed to hear them but the customer describes them as a plane flying overhead or a volcano). The boiler (and hot water) appears to be overly hot (don't think that the boiler is switching off). The noises only occur when water is heated indirectly. Heating water directly does not cause the sounds (not sure about the dirty water). Incidentally the cylinder is about 25 years old.
A few other points of interest:
* All gate valves are working correctly
* Can't find the feed & expansion tank anywhere!
* No motorised valves
* Customer says there is no cylinder thermostat (I can't say for sure if there is or isn't one)
* All radiators get hot
* Pump appears to be working correctly
* Boiler not serviced in 8 years (heat exchanger scaled up?)!!!!!!
* Customer never drained system nor added inhibitor
I suspect that the indirect coil in the cylinder has sprung a leak, causing contamination of the water in the cylinder. Any other views or advice would be greatly appreciated.
