Hi there,

I'm after some ideas of how to lock an iron garden gate

The lock doesn't work - previous owners had a padlock on it (which also wouldn't have worked) - and we dont have the key for that.

Any ideas?

Fix a chain to the wall.
Wrap that around gate with a padlock

I can't see anything I'd class as a lock; what do you mean by "doesn't work"

Also not sure what you mean by "a padlock wouldn't work" - is the gate as pictured not secure because the whole thing can be lifted up, defeating the latch?

Prevent it being liftable

Also prevent it being possible to remove the bolt the latch pivots around, as it would then just pivot around the padlock

Cut the padlock off and fit a new one you do have the key for?

Thanks. Sorry, I've not explained it very well.

When you press down on the handle, the whole of the handle lifts (i.e. the old padlock currently in place isn't doing anything).

I'm not sure fitting a new padlock would work as the same issue would just occur?
