Hi,

Have been removing a lathe and plaster ceiling in an attic bedroom. Sampled the ceiling insulation before hand, no asbestos detected - this consists of rolls of mineral wool insulation. When I got to the sloping part of the ceiling the insulation changed to some sort of loose fill material which is in clumps. I imagine it has been blown in due to lack of access. Have sent it for asbestos testing just in case, but does anybody recognise what it may be? I'm wondering if it's a loose fill mineral wool insulation similar to what used to be blown into cavities?

Maybe mineral wool originally rolled out under flat roof then removed when it got water damaged and roof replaced?
That's the leftover bits.

If asbestos it won't melt or burn. We used to chuck asbestos wool insulation on a gas fire as it glowed for ages and looked a good effect. Mad!

Normal mineral fibre quilt won't burn or melt, that's why they use it for fire barriers. It does not contain asbestos.

Have you had cavity wall insulation blown in? I found quite a lot in the edges of the loft, where it had blown up out of the open cavity during installation. Older houses don't usually have cavity closers, so you can end up with a good snowdrift in the loft. If so it's mineral wool so still requires skin covering, goggles and a decent mask.
