IE locking up when contacting internet.

Sorry if this is a frequent one. We have a Hygrade M6400 laptop, running Windows 2000. It has Internet Explorer which has been "customised" by Wanadoo when this was used as the ISP. The connection is through a SpeedTouch 330 modem. It was flaky on Wanadoo, but now it is used on a new line, and the ISP is Demon. It seemed ok yesterday after the username and password was set in the Speedtouch panel. I also tried linking to the internet using an ethernet modem router, which worked.

The connection was not working automatically by starting the "customised" IE, but it would work if the password was re-entered in the SpeedTouch panel.

Now it just locks up when the IE (Wanadoo version) is clicked.

Does anyone know a fix

How have you got a "customised" version of internet explorer. From what I gather, whenever you change settings in IE, it applies to any future incidence of IE that you open.

If you go into Start.. Settings.. Control Panel.. Internet Options.. Connections.. Setup.. This will run the connection wizard to allow you to get the connection settings sorted.

I presume it got customised (with a Wanadoo logo instead of the standard) when it was first used with Wanadoo, and I suspect a Wanadoo welcome disc was run. It may be just the logo, but I would expect other changes too.

You may be right that there are other changes. Likely as not, it will have set the default connection to be used for access the internet. I would have thought, though, that these changes would be applied across the board to Internet Explorer. Do you still have a version of Internet explorer that appears "normal"?

There's no "normal" IE as far as I know. However, the latest bit of information I have makes my original information a bit redundant.

It appears that when started thismorning, the boot time was excessive, and NO applications could be opened.

1. Start in Safe Mode.
2. Empty all folders called "Temp" or "temp" (empty, not delete).
3. Open Internet Options in Control Panel, and delete all Temporary Internet Files (including all offline content).
4. Reset all IE options to the default.

Shutdown, then start in Normal Mode; if the machine is still misbehaving, and you'd like a HijackThis session, then Email me and I'll take you through it.

Thanks guys for the info. Temp files removed (or quite a lot of them) has resulted in the machine working, albeit slowly. Can you give me a clue to the next step please? Internet connection was established, but slower than dial-up rather than 2meg ADSL

PS. This machine has Unspy PC on it so having just read a review or two, it appears this is a nasty which could give the symptoms. I don't have any of this trouble, as I run Mac's . Seems this is one way of removing it. Would it have any problems?

Also:

1. Empty the recycle bin.
2. Install and run LavaSoft Ad-Aware.
3. Install and run SpyBot Search and Destroy.
4. Ditch any other spywaredetector nonsense software that you might have.

I have ST330 .. twice in near 2 yrs it seemed to 'screw' up, un then re plugged connections was then ok.

Tried using the Spyware Doctor UnSpy removal tool, but it could not complete the scan operation. This has got me stuck as I don't know modern windoze systems.
