Hi,

Has anyone out there any experience in using Ikea kitchen carcasses with bespoke door and drawer fronts? I’m reasonably satisfied with Ikea’s quality (as much as you can be with flat-packed chipboard – if assembled once and v. carefully!) but I’m looking for a contemporary wood cladding look, a bit like JasonB’s superb kitchen : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Kitchens/PICT0281.jpg. I’m aware that Ikea sizes are non-standard and the fact that their carcasses are available only in white but I’m confident that I can work around those constraints, hence the request for ideas and leads on bespoke fronts.

And if JasonB is online, I’d be grateful if you could tell me what wood you used in this kitchen. And where I could contact you as I have plenty of real carpentry work needing doing.

Many thanks in advance.

Les

you want a half bespoke kitchen?

The actuall quality of the kitchen crap, but the look of such to be good o_O

wait until the majoirty of the midlands diy'ers turn up.
plenty cheap mate, plenty cheap ;)

That one is actually quiet expensive, not much change out of £100K. The carcases are oak veneered MDF, dovetailed oak draws and solid 30mm european oak fronts.

There is no reason you can't do something similar with shed carcases, Ikea are a bit harder to fit but the build is the same as Wickes, B&Q etc. This one is B&Q carcases except the dresser and the rest made by me.

These were existing Ikea that I just put new fronts on

Thanks Jason. Fantastic kitchen BTW, and I thought it might be oak & can quite believe the price tag. You do sometimes get what you pay for. Unfortunately, 100k is out of my league :(

What would you advise to achieve a similar effect ? I'm thinking of some sort of veneer .. ? any ideas.

Txs, Les

The doors are not that expensive it sthings like £9K for teh sub-zero fridge and same sort of money for the Aga.

If you are having mostly doors then a veneered board would actually be more stable, ideally get oak veneered moisture resistant MDF and a matching iron on real wood edgeing. Thes elounge units are American white oak veneered MDF so will give an idea of t look, just cut the board the other way round to get horizontal grain.

If you don't have facilities to neatly cut the board then try someone like

Add a laminate worktop with a thick square edge and no one will know the difference ;)
