I wonder if someone could advise me please. We have a solid fuel heating system which heats radiators, and does the hot water. We also supplement the hot water with an immersion heater once a day. The last week or so we have noticed the hot water isn't very hot. I used a neon tester and discovered there is no power getting to the element on the hot cylinder. Working back, I have mains coming in to the timer, but no power coming out of it and going to the heater. Of course I have set the timer to constant. We have recently had a couple of power cuts, and am wondering if a power surge has blown the timer unit, it is 3 years old. Should I just replace the timer ?, my only other thought was that if the immersion element has blown, could this in turn have damaged the timer clock. I am not an electrician, or plumber, and could use some professional advice.

Most likely the timer itself has given up the ghost......an immersion heater can typically take in the region of 3kW so thats on the limit of normal domestic timers.
John :)

Hi John, yes in fact it is just the clock blown, I have now replaced it and all is well.
Many thanks
