Indian sandstone paving

OK, Have the father in law with me for 8 weeks so need some work for him.
I am looking at laying Indian flags, all various thicknesses. spot bedding or solid base, if I am going to lay a path down the side of my house am I best doing a solid bed and laying 1 by 1.
Should I make the bed from sharp sand/cement or ballast/cement and are there any tips to get the base at the right height bearing in mind the various thicknesses of flags?
Could get someone to do it, but fancy the challenge.

bed on a solid bed of wet mortar. aim for about 25 mm thick bed. lay it thicker and tap them down to get them level. DOnt spot bed.
