Hi everyone!

I recently moved to London and for years I have loved industrial shelves and finally wanted to build them now.
But unfortunately it seems to be impossible to get the supplies in London.

First of all the iron pipes: I have been to b&q, wickes, cityplumbing and finally found pipefittingsdirect which seem to sell Tee fittings and elbows but still not the pipes, and not in different lengths...

Second even the wood is giving me problems. Also for my patio project I would need timber boards in different sizes but where to get them and who cuts them? I would need 4-5cm thick wood, 35cm wide cut into different lengths. But where to I get that???

I am really frustrated because I already spend several days trying to find the supplies without any progress :(
I would be more than happy if there was somebody who could tell me where I would get the supplies I need.

Hope to hear from you soon.

For iron pipe, all electrical factors will stock galvanised conduit in various sizes and all the fittings. You will need a pipe vice and stock & dies for cutting and threading (you may be able to hire these or a industrial electrician may cut and thread for you for a reasonable fee). For timber of various sizes any saw mill or good joiners shop will do this for you.

Slight problem with this howto is that it's written in the US, where they use this strange system of arbitrary measuring units than don't divide neatly. I think they black iron they are using is gas pipe. For some reason, using ferrus pipe to transport gas has fallen out of favour in the UK. As stated, you could use 20 or 25mm steel electrical conduit. For the wood, search around for a good wood yard.

If you prefer black conduit is available in black, only problem is that it marks easily when threading as it is painted black.

There will an industrial supplies place somewhere near you - try looking for things like "industrial fastener distributor" in your local area.

I've got some racking build with Key Clamps - partly because one of our customers was fitting out a new warehouse and I was able to add a few bits on to their large order and get "a nice discount" :)
