infra-red gate control problem

We've just moved to a place with a gated car park. The remote control given is out of production and no replacement is made. The one we have works at a distance of about from 5 feet from the detector but that's all. Battery has been replaced. There are 10 pins, 5 up and 5 down.

Any ideas as to why it won't work at a sensible distance?
