An exchange box will be around £450 with 12 month warranty, but you can get one from a breakers for a lot less - if you don't mind the gamble.
As for a repair, see if you can get a local fixed price which will be around 4 hrs labour, not including removing it from the car.
Consider a replacement clutch at the same time, perhaps with a new DM flywheel too.
50k miles is really low for bearing issues.....what's going on, do you think?
John :)

had clutch done last year.took to garage this morning as getting quite a whirring noise when setting off in low gear. mechanic said they do about 5 a week at there place. put it in first and took to biting point. been like this for some months now

For sure, I can't see why the whine is prevalent in first gear......I would have expected the noise to be worse in 5th or 6th - if its a six speed.
If its so bad, I think I'd go for a warrantied refurbished gearbox, on the assumption that any scrapper box would be the same as yours.
I'd also go for a fully synthetic gear oil on the rebuild - 50k is nowt really.
Its hardly a good report for Vauxhall  I based my prices and time on a box rebuild for an Astra van, but of course gawd knows how that one was driven in the past.
John :)

Are you sure it's not the clutch? If it makes a noise as it reaches "biting point" it sounds like it's down to the rivets
