my partner installed a log burner & aluminium flue in our new home himself. Everything went well, but now when we have heavy rain, water runs into the log burner & floods the hearth. We also have a very strong smell of ash when the fire isn't lit. Any ideas?

You need an appropriate cowl on the chimney top to keep the rain out......hopefully you have a stainless steel liner, rather than an aluminium one!
Regarding the smell, maybe you live in an area that is prone to down draught?
