Installing a dishwasher: basic question?

Hi,

Whilst attempting to install a dishwasher that I aquired last night, I had some problems fitting the cold water feed.

I used a plastic Y-socket adapter that I was given so I can share the supply with the washing machine. However when I turned the valve back on, water came gushing out. The only way I could make the thing work was to do away with the Y-socket and just screw the dishwasher straight in (no washing machine though).

Is it likely that the Y-socket thingy is broken or something? Or am I doing something wrong?

Was the rubber washer fitted?

I tried again last night and I dont think its something I'm doing wrong. The Y piece has got a rubber washer but I'm going to try and get a new Y piece anyway.
