Installing hive v3 receiver in parallel with my existing time switch on a conventional boiler?

Yes, I'm aware that the hive 'replaces' the functions of my existing HW and CH programmer in that the mobile app can have schedules plus on demand etc.
I can have the heating off all the time I am on holiday and use the app to turn it on when I am 2 hrs away from getting back. Very handy.

However, I currently have the heating set to come on for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening but, as is a frequent occurrence, I went out today and returned in the afternoon to a chilly house. Accordingly I just walked into the kitchen and pressed the +1hr button on my programmer to turn on the heating for an extra hour. Very convenient and quick.

If I replace the programmer with the receiver then in the above scenario I would have to find my phone, which is probably going to be somewhere else in the house and maybe switched off, open the app, find the option to turn on the heating and then finally turn it on with the app. Not so convenient nor quick and more of a solution looking for a problem.

But... if I wired in the receiver's boiler connections in parallel with the programmer's boiler connections and left the programmer in place then if either the programmer or the app called for heat the boiler would start up. Going on holiday I would turn off both heating and hot water on the programmer, as I usually do, and control the heating with the app. When I get a bit chilly in the house during the day I would just press the +1 hr button on the kitchen programmer (without needing all the palava with finding my phone etc.)

Any reason why this couldn't be done?

... and yes I probably am a little lazy and a bit adverse to having my life run via apps;)

Or you could simply press the boost button on the top of the Hive thermostat?

Ah... (Sheepish grin), I didn't know it had one!
I'm picking a kit up from Screwfix tomorrow so I suppose I would have spotted that then.

Err... yes, you could be right. That would do it:giggle:

How long is the boost for?

I have two systems in parallel, but I can't see how it would help you. I think Hive has geofencing, the idea is when your phones get near to home it turns on the central heating. My Nest, Energenie, Kasa, and Wiser all have the option. I found it useless, as it fired the central heating far too late, and the house still cool on return.

OK that seems like all I need then. I'll replace it. Thank you for the information

I agree. I get a little fed up with the fixation of modern IT to 'help' us by detecting what we want and acting on our behalf. One reason why I didn't go for a smart thermostat with a 'learning' function. I'll decide when I want the heating on thank you very much and I'm not really happy about you detecting when I'm not at home and shutting the heating off for me or knowing my GPS coordinates when I'm out. You're a central heating controller, not a spy for Google! (I can't believe I'm saying this, I've got a PhD in AI. - or maybe that's why I'm saying it !)
