Hi All,
I'm about to install a 1100 x 900 JT40 stone resin shower tray into a 3 sided alcove. I've strengthened and leveled the joists and installed an 18mm Marine Ply base. It is dead level.
I've put the tray in place to test/find location of waste and the tray is still level in all directions. Instructions say to use mortar or tile cement to bed in the tray. Is this necessary if it is already level? You can install this tray on a riser kit (6 legs) and it doesn't seem logical to me that the tray can sit on 6 legs but not flat to the floor. The bottom of the tray is encapsulated in plastic, so I cant see mortar sticking to it anyway.
Because the tray is going into an alcove, its going to be hard to lower the thing down onto a bed of anything without it going everywhere. The one that came out was just siliconed on 3 sides and the bottom and did not want to shift! Admittedly it was a fully plastic tray but I was planning on using the same technique.
There is plenty of (conflicting) advice on the internet about the subject...some of it quite old...and I'm still none the wiser.
So, has anyone had a similar experience?
Or installed one with the mortar/tile adhesive method?
What are the real life issues with not installing on mortar or tile adhesive?
Are there any more modern methods?
Thanks!
