Hi

I am converting my concrete fabricated garage and am going to use 7x2 joists but I need to install a loft ladder for access but am worried about how its going to effect the joists I have attached a drawing of my plans if you could give me some feedback on how I can improve this or if its even possible.

Thank you in advance here is a link to the loft ladder i intend to use

I can't see a problem. You could double joist either side but I don't think that's needed

I would also consider rotating hatch 90°, unless headroom is an issue. If the joist at the "top" can be screwed to the stud wall it won't need doubling.

small point probably not important
you mention 38mm thats 1 1/2" not 2 so 25% less strength and off course different size
only mentioning in case you've done span calculations for 7x2" or have done an accurate plan that may be thrown out by several inches

also going up a ladder onto a blank wall can be quite restrictive and unnatural as you have to step to the side and up a very awkward general movement ok when young but more difficult as your body gives a progressively stronger opinion in later life

also suspect your ladder wont work facing the wall as it overhangs at the back towards the wall when up
and the other way round the base will be very close to the wall
but purely a guess and worth checking

Hi Big-all
Thank you for your replay I haven’t bought the timber yet so will make sure I get 7x2 cause your right I did my calculation base on that, there is another room behind that stud wall that’s not detailed on the drawing so plenty of space at the top of the ladder

Thanks
Craig
