I've got a concrete garage - one of those lifesize-Bayko-type-construction ones with panels slotted into uprights. Alborough is the make, but I think "Marley" has become the generic term.

I don't use it as a garage, and I was planning to remove it, and replace it with a good quality wooden outbuilding to use as a hobby room/workshop.

But that involves expense - if nothing else for the disposal of all the materials and to have the existing base extended so that the new building would be the requisite distance from the boundary.

Apart from a few bits (more on that later) it is very sound, so I was thinking of possibly saving on expenditure and effort by keeping it, and cladding it with timber to improve (considerably) the appearance. I would also need to insulate it, and for all sorts of good reasons would rather do that externally. Particularly if I'm going to be cladding it anyway.

So, working outwards from the walls, is this right:

  1. Insulation (probably EPS)
  2. Waterproof breather membrane
  3. Bit of an air gap
  4. Cladding (hardwood shiplap)

?

There are other things I'll need to address, like insulating the floor, filling in where the double doors currently are, and replacing the roof (corrugated asbestos cement panels), and I'll be back with info and photos of the roof trusses for opinions (hopefully) on what sort of weight for a warm deck they would support, help with, or with finding, detailing for the roof/wall joins, and so on, but one thing at a time....
