Problem: We need to use our loft for storage. Our plan was to get the whole loft floor insulated, taking advantage of the govt. energy saving subsidy, then board out the middle third section on top of the insulation. We had our loft surveyed by a company. The thickness of insulation material that they are required to use is 250mm, but the depth of the space between the joists is only 100mm.
We have already discarded their suggestions of loose boards on top of the insulation (any weight imposed on top would damage the lathe & plaster ceilings below) or drilling blocks onto the joists and building a 'stage' floor (dangerous: not enough to support, joists too narrow). We asked the company if we could board on top of our own thinner insulation material, and if they would insulate the rest of the loft. We were told that the only way that they would insulate would be to rip up our boards put their insulation down throughout!
Is there any insulation material no thicker than 100mm, preferably bagged not loose? What are our options? Would be grateful for suggestions!
