Insulation in attic rooms

Starting to think about doing some work in our two attic rooms and just need to get some advice.

Its a 1900s (ish) 4 floor terraced house with two double bedrooms on the attic floor - one with a velux and one with an old pitched dormer. Over the years the back room (veluxed) has had some problems with slipped tiles (slate) and subsequently some of the plaster has fallen and some of it looks well dodgy. The plaster is black horsehair type.

The dormer in the front room is all rotten but the plaster looks sound if somewhat shoddily done. The plan ultimately is to replace the dormer with a much larger flat roof dormer subject to us sorting out all the legalities - planning etc.

We've been renovating slowly and had to go back to the bare brick in most rooms (basement kitchen etc). Our plasterer has suggested that we should use the existing ceiling and batten over it, insulate and fix new plasterboard. However another friend (trade but not plastering though v handy) has said we should bite the bullet and rip the old plaster off and use spray insulation. Insulation is v important as there is no CH on that floor and the plan is to make the room habitable again (currently the spare room/music room).

So which would be the best in terms of ease/cost/result?

I hope you don't mean sprayed insulation on the underside of the tiles or slates? Terrible stuff. Look up the trade names like Warmroof on "search" on here and you'll be able to read other people's experiences.

Yep..just searched for them....hmmmm...ok...amend that to use normal insulation - still undecided about ripping off the old stuff though.
