Not sure how long this has been happening.

But recently its been brought to my attention that when i run a power tool in the garage, the tv starts making clicking noises and the picture breaks up. Its been suggested that this is a emi issue. If this is the case how would i go about stopping it from happening.

Neal.

Most tools do have built in suppression but once any damage to the motor either part burnt out or even worn brushes then it will not stop the interference. Likely power tool on it's way out and needs replacing.

However using surge protected sockets can help. Also using Ali-tube cable for house wiring helps but not really a retro fix. Some houses wired before 1960's do have a problem all to do with the two way wiring of light switches using twin rather than three core cable and as a result tend to radiate interference. Also running power cables with aerial cables can make the problem worse and builders often did this. So using a new aerial cable not with mains feed can help.

The use of any aerial booster can also be a problem as they tend to amplify the interference as well as signal and one may need some band pass filters to reduce it. Sky is a problem as to use the digi-eyes you can't also use band pass filters.

But although there are things that can improve the problem it normally points to a fault in the power tool and likely only cure will be new power tool.
