I'm in the process of updating a 1970s house. I will be fitting some new skirting boards and need some advice on which primer and paint to use. I will also be stripping the old architrave and skirting where it's in good condition.

On our previous house I used Valspar eggshell and it was a nightmare to use as it started to drag if I went over it within a couple of minutes. I haven't used gloss paint since the 70s as it used to make me really ill for some reason.

I would be grateful for any recommendation on suitable primer and paint in white.

As a decorator, I still use oil based eggshell, Dulux Trade. If I have to use a waterbased finish, I specify Eico flat. I do however add Floetrol to it to help it flow. It is one of the only waterbased finishes that I can sand in between coats which doesn't clog the sandpaper.

Floetrol is great for helping to maintain a wet edge when working with waterbased finishes. A cheaper option is to use propylene glycol. I have never tried the latter, but a mate didn't want to pay for Floetrol so I gave him a bottle of PG that I had purchased years earlier, he said it made a massive difference.
