Interior wall insulation, couple of questions

I'm going to insulate my outside interior wall but need a bit of info regarding space! The insulation is going up the stairs and as such there is not a lot of room so need to keep the space i'm losing to a minimum. Can I just stick the poly plasterboard straight onto the wall using dry wall screws without battens to save room, if not how to I go about fitting them? Do I need to use metal battens then stick the board onto that plus the skim maybe losing 60mm? Doesn't sound ideal so help and tips much appriciated

Of course, the wall on the side of my house which one side faces outside and the other inside. Not a wall which is connected to another room or house.

Are we saying this wall is separate from the house, one elevation facing away from the house, one facing the house, but both effectively outside i.e. external...pinenot

You can fit insulation backed plasterboard anyway you would plasterboard. Onto battens or dot and dab, as long as you get the right board for the application.

Thanks for that, wasn't sure if the battens were needed for one purpose or another

After I have took the wallpaper of all I have to do then is screw the insulation board to the wall and skim it then? Sounds simple enough. Why do people batten it then, must be a reason for it?
