hi guys,

Newbie to the forum here, but ok-ish at diy.

I’ve updated my intermediate switch to a better quality one (new one MK) as the old one was buzzing.

The lighting circuit is main switch down stairs by front door, intermediate top of stairs and other switch end of landing.

Should the intermediate switch be able to turn the lamps on & off even off the main switch by the door is off? The intermediate switch does control the lamps (on & off), but only if the first switch by the front door is on.

I would like full control of the lamps with the intermediate switch if possible, independently of the position of the front door switch.

Photo of intermediate wiring attached.

Many thanks for reading - Lee

Normally, it would be wired with the same colour in the 1s and the same colour in the 2s. That is different cables at each end of the switch.

It is difficult to be certain with the unusual grey wire but try the two blacks in 1s and red and grey in 2s.
