I’m changing my intermediate light switch and was hoping someone can help. The old switch was labelled with both L1 connections to the left (top and bottom) and both L2 connections to the right (top and bottom)

these were originally wired up as shown below

However when I came to wire up the new intermediate light switch, L1 are both at the top (left and right) and L2 are both at the bottom. I wired the light up according to the same labels however the light wouldn't work at intended. The other two switches couldn’t override the intermediate light and turn it off and the intermediate light couldn’t override the other light switches if they were on. I decided to wire the lights as they looked previously, ignoring the labels L1L2. It now works perfectly with the other two light switches. My question is, can this be in anyway dangerous and cause a fire and have I done this correctly? My new wiring is below (British General). Thanks .

The wire arrangement appears correct, it would not be dangerous, or cause a fire.

However, I may be wrong, but it looks as if the wires haven't been captured correctly by the screws - they look to be to the side of the screws, rather than being compressed underneath them...

These connections could eventually become loose, leading to increased resistance of the connections, with the possibility of overheating.

It is "Good Practice"
always to use a multi-meter
to confirm the "action" of any "Intermediate" Switch
before installing it.
