does anyone know what would be the cause of my radiators not working downstairs? This has been very intermittent, 4 evenings in the past 3 weeks but always ok in the mornings? The upstairs radiators have always been ok.

Tell us about the radiators then.

Do they have thermostatic valves?

How old is the system?

What control valve is it?

etc..........

etc.............

well i'll tell you as much as i know but i'm a mere female i'm afraid so well out of my league! just wanted to see if i could get some idea of what it might be before i call someone out! The radiators do have temperature dials on them, the boiler was put in 4 years ago before i bought the house. It's a baxi bermuda back boiler system. That's probably about as much as i can tell you at the mo. I have read a few other bits on here about cold radiators and alot seem to point to the pump so I had a look tonight but as they're working tonight wasn't really going to tell me alot! Only thing is it was very hot which I wouldn't have thought it should be?

do you have a seperate room thermostat for upstairs and downstairs?

Umm......I'm not too sure how to sound inoffensive, but I've found people either know a lot more than they're letting on, or they learn quite quickly given one or two snippits of information. So you'll have to dispense with the modesty :)

Do the radiators fail to get hot if the dials are turned up to maximum?

Do they get hot until the air temperature has warmed up? or do they stop working so the room temperature is cold?

Which make of valves are they?

when the radiators are cold the room is freezing-not surprisingly if the radiators aren't on! there is only 1 thermostat in the hall.the radiators that aren't working are the hall and 2 in the sitting room which is all the downstairs radiators, there are 4 radiators upstairs in the bedrooms and bathroom and all are working fine. The pump is upstairs aswell.
have tried turning the downstairs ones to full but it makes no difference. all the pipes downstairs going into the radiators are cold aswell.

Try turning the upstairs ones off, and leave the downstairs ones on.

Let us know what happens.

Have you bled the air from the radiators and pump?
