Internal Door hanging

I am about to start hanging new doors in my Victorian semi. I bought some conventional butt hinges but have now noticed 2 things.

1. The old hinges were not sunk into the door frame.
2. The arcitrave (original) is fitted flush to the door frame so there is no gap for the hinge pin.

I removed the doors and hinges about a year ago and can't remember what was used. I think they were raising butt hinges but am unsure.

Any advice would be great.

mmmm origional as fitted archatraves should be set back around 4 to 6mm from new

brass hinges should have the full nuckle visible beyond the door face
steel hinges should be half the nuckle showing

modern thin hinges cannot be sunk into the origional frame and door pockets and maintain a 2mm gap all round in general if you have a pocket on the frame and fix the hinge into it you cant recess into the door otherwise you wont have any clearence

i think i am going to recess the arci so the hinge can be fitted correctly.
