Hi
We have a 6 year old extension built by the previous owners of the house. It has the kitchen in, and we are currently in the process of ordering a new kitchento replace it.
The floor currently has tongue and groove on wooden joists over a concrete base. The joist are around 8cm tall and actually sit directly on the concrete.
The floor is not level and is bouncy, and as we are having slate tiles we need to sort it out.
I am looking for the most cost effective solution. I think I have two options:
1) Rip out the joists and just work on the existing concrete base, there is already a step down into the room so the slightly lower level is not a problem. However, if we do this then the level of the tiles will be below the dpc, is this a problem?
2) Shore up the current joists and make them level and stronger (there are currently no noggins). Does it matter that they just sit directly on top of the concrete base? If I do this and want to lay slate tiles, what sort of wood do I need to put on top of the joists? I think I need plywood, but how many layers?
Thanks for any help
Chris
