iron soil stack to earthenware socket

I,m replacing my kitchen and after removing the old cupboards noticed that the area where the main soil stack exits the property was damp.

After closer inspection there seemed to be no obvious seal around the connection onto the earthenware socket.

I\\\'m sure the pipe should be cemented into the socket. if so what should it be sealed with.

Also the area around he pipe is damp mud. would this be the soil waste or just dampness from the ground where the waste pipe disappears

One would wrap rope around the pipe and push it into the socket, then fill with a special cement available from builders merchants.

Neat cement will do if you get stuck, mix it into a paste, and don't play with it because it goes off quick.

bit of newspaper in the gaps in the socket , then 1;1 sand cement or jetcem
