Is it just me who thinks this forum is often belligerent?

I don’t know why it is but of all the forums I’ve been on I can’t help but notice how this one, (DIYnot), often quickly descends into a slagging match. I’m not blaming DIYnot, nor am I pointing the finger at anyone in particular! It’s just an observation.

Seriously, honestly, I don’t think I’ve never known anywhere quite as bad as it is here just to stay on a topic long enough to get past the first page without an e-war developing and I don’t know why? It’s made all the worse for me because I know there are very intelligent, knowledgeable, great posters here and I really do get so much useful information and help.

As still a relatively new poster on here, I don’t know if anyone would agree with me but, if I am right, where does it stem from or is it somehow in the nature of many people interested in DIY? Maybe I’ve arrived here at a bad time and it’s just coincidental that I keep coming across the bickering, but the impression I get is that certain posters would argue oil doesn’t float on water if they just don’t like the opposition.

The latest one I took an interest in, for example, is this and sure enough it soon became handbags at six feet and the topic became secondary. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know the people or personalities involved and I’m sure it’s none of my business; I’m just asking the question so please don’t shoot the messenger. If I’m wrong then I apologise in advance.

People set out with good intentions, then get dragged down to the troll's/stupid person's level and from then on it's just a personal battle between them. Troll's 'mates' join in, the 'mates' of the person who bit join in, and we end up with the sort of posts that seem to make up 90% of the GD forum.

Not forgetting that there are plenty of people on here with over-inflated egos that think the sun shines out of their backside.
 
How right you are ...... glad its not just me.
Trust me you are on dodgy ground daring to make that post.

The general theme is:
Start with a sensible topic - have one or two intelligent replies -
Next along comes a forum 'golden oldie' the 'we were here first and we know how its done brigade'....they will probably put something quite controversial, but acceptable.
(After all it true they were here first)
Next come the ....'had enough of this lets stir it up crew'
and finally heaven help you, because in storm the heavy mob....who unfortunately are only able to make a point by swearing at you and making personal offensive remarks about you.

As you say there are some very intelligent and very interesting posts on here .... there are some very nice people on here, but an adult discussion....mmmmm chances might be very slim.....please don't hold your breath.
 
I sincerely hope this isn't dodgy ground because, as I say, this absolutely is not an attack on this forum. It's not a forum's fault who it attracts so I hope my question is okay..

Your question is perfectly valid I'm sure any rational person will agree with you.
What I think is unfortunate is that there are a huge amount of people who use the forum and I wonder if they avoid commenting/posting because they just don't want to be shot down inflames for daring to have an opinion.

PS the dodgy ground comment was simply a comment about the reaction you may get, as in the one from sooey....which I am not sure was seriously horrible or not.

I did see sooey's remark and ignored it because it is the type of thing to which I refer. Maybe it was said in jest, I don’t know, (or care).

If it was said to wind me up or p1$$ me off, if we had a pm facility I would like to introduce him/her to a different uncensored forum where I have been flamed and his/her comment would look like a pop gun by comparison.

I repeat, this is NOT an attack on DIYnot! (I am not a turkey voting for Christmas). I made the post because it is an observation - and that is all! I speak as I find and give credit to the mods for not censoring this thread and keeping it on topic. (That’s how I see it so far).

What I am saying, all I am saying, is that it so often comes down to personal insults and put-downs which mean absolutely nothing to many of us and detracts from the O.P.

At times it's like entering room 12 of the insult scene from the Monty Python Sketch with Graham Chapman
 
I agree, generally its the "midnight" squad with their own conception of the world and its carry ons. then countless complaints until the posts are removed. By the same.

GD should be allowed more free reign though, the TRADE site forums are generally better as the fools cannot stay in the same conservation as the qualified.

I decided to descend the level of drivel..... you may have seen a 'few comments' about a film I watched, and commented as it went on.

The decent members generally ignored it, which was good - it was not topical of a subject that was up for debate. It was a movie review from my tired eyes. All off a sudden FMT, called me a 'feckin knob'. FMT's comment

I thanked her (surely no fella would admit to looking like him), and she went quiet.

My point being, if you don't argue with the mentally challenged, they go away..... and maybe sulk a bit as they have failed with their bully girl tactics?

Sooey IMO always challenges members with a valid response as does Joe-90.
