Hi all

We would like to revamp our staircase. We plan to repaint the spindles white, and ideally we would like a nice wood hand rail. Have not decided yet whether we would like an old aged oak type look or a dark wood finish.... The current one has been stained a horrible orange wood colour and I'm not sure it would be possible to strip it and then stain it to the colour we would like. So I'm wondering whether it is possible to get a new hand rail and start again (without disturbing the rest of the spindles and posts). The tops of the posts would also need changing....

If I need to post pics in order for someone to help, please let me know what you would need to see and I'll get straight on the case.

Cheers

A woodstain will cover most other finishes, no need to change upper rail.

Hi

Thanks for the advice. However, I do find that woodstain over an existing varnish is a very different finish compared to woodstain (or dye) on untreated wood. Especially when the existing varnish is so orange and the finish we are going for is far from that....

With regard to removing the rail, is that possible at all? TBH, I'm thinking it is not.... But I know little about such things so thought I'd just make sure with folk who know more about such things than I do.

Cheers
