Is solvent weld cleaner needed

No, just make sure the pipe is nice and clean - and dry.

Cleaner is the prep' bond agent before applying the cement (glue) - the cleaner 'burns' into the plastic first then quickly while still tacky apply the cement and push fit the joint parts together.

You can pull apart some joints that have been 'glued only' whereas a joint with cleaner then glue will bond permanently, this is especially relative to 'dedicated' solvent weld systems which *must* be prep cleaned or they will not bond.

Use the cleaner...I've pulled apart plenty of just glued joints.

Only used cleaner when specified (council contracts) , done plenty glued joints without cleaner and all held up on air test , no fookin way a glued joint will pull apart cleaner used or not...

if its a existing stack then cleaner on a strap on boss is a must, if its new stack then you should be fine without cleaner but its still the best option.
