Chesil beach, viewed from Portland Bill ... simply magnificent !! I have been fortunate to paddle in the Straits of Malacca, float amongst the reefs of the Coral Sea and marvel at the immense Indian Ocean, shiver with the chill off the Southern Ocean ..... But I am drawn to Chesil Beach and often make the pilgrimage, since mid '60's.
Around '88 a family member completed our tree (after many years of research and lots of leg work) ..... Surprise ! Our traceable ancestors hit the beach in the West Bay area circa 1600, the extreme, at a pinch, west end of Chesil Beach !!
A true wonder of the world !! On our own doorstep !!

Is that MMJ I see in the far distance ?

Hey, Chesil Beach! My family spent a couple of very happy holidays in Weymouth when I was around 10. Twas great sitting on the beach, watching the Tornados fly along the coast at phenomenal speed and insanely low altitudes. It's great the Cold War is over and everything, but I think that anyone born after 1985 will have missed out on proper James Bond films and books on military aeroplanes. I am barely on the cusp.

Not as impressive as launching a fighter from a submarine, but the US did a test landing of a Hercules on an aircraft carrier in the 1960s. No arrestor hook on landing, no catapult on take-off.

Here is it landing.

Here is it taking off again. There seems to be disagreement as to whether or not the JATOs are lit for this.

Bearing in mind the C-130 isn't exactly small, seeing it against a 78,000 ton carrier puts into perspective the size of those ships!

Aah the good old C-130.spent 9 hours in one on way back form middle east and 12 from central africa all with excellent in flight entertainment!! (a bucket for a toilet and some netting for a seat.........the air stewardesses were as good as well!!

a bucket for a toilet

Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't actually on the ramp!

C-17 has proper toilets (well, airliner ones) in it, so servicemen can now have a poo on their way home... AND wash their hands afterwards!

Wifes cousin flys f-16's in far east, was in 'Black Knights' (super skyhawks) display team of the best 6 pilots, for several years ... Low level over the sea ? He told of the 'wake' he leaves, ... from a height looks more like hi-speed vessel than plane .. apparently.

The Aussies gave up on Sub a/cc when they ran out of aircraft not because of paint stripping ;)

If at first you don't succeed, redefine success

I don't have a solution, but I do admire the problem
